Lavender Update

As things started to green up this spring, I was anxious to see if the lavender I planted last year survived the winter. The good news was that most of the plants did survive. the exception was three plants of a Gresso cultivar that all died.

The not-so-good news was that the landscape fabric I used did not do well over the winter. The chickens did not help matters. I had the area fenced off last year but took the fence down for winter. Because the soil in this area is so sandy, the chickens like to use the area for dust baths, which killed a couple of plants.

I pulled all the old fabric out and replaced it with grass mulch. I pulled out the dead Gresso plants and replanted with Elegance Purple lavender. Lastly, I put in a short fence to provide protection from the chickens. I did leave a small area of sandy soil, so the chickens could still partake in dust baths. My hope is they will refrain from trying to get over the fence.
