Onion Harvest

We had about a week period in late June where we seemed to be between harvests. The strawberries were just ending, the lettuce was at peak, and the peas were just starting. A stretch of 90 degree weather followed by rain pushed the garden to another level. Peas have peaked, and with early peppers, allowed a couple of stir fry dinners. The heat and the nearly 5 inches of rain we got this weekend were not too kind to our onions, causing about a quarter of them to flop over. We have learned the hard way to get these out of the ground so they can cure for storage. A handful may be a bit past for curing, but we can eat those.

There are still plenty of onions in the ground, including the ones we planted from sets and all the ones we planted from seed. The seed-started onions are looking pretty good, while the ones from sets are the ones that have started to flop. We are in pursuit of large slicing and storage onions, so the hope is that the plants from seed will give us a good crop.
