One and a Half (Plus) Crates of Potatoes
One and a Half (Plus) Crates of Potatoes

In the past, we've never been successful growing potatoes. Having now grown potatoes somewhat successfully this year, I think I know all the ways that we went wrong historically.

In any case, we paid a little shy of $2 for seed potatoes this year and we designated about 6 feet of a single row of garden space to plant those seed potatoes.

Talking with an Amish neighbor that I'm friendly with about how she's successful with her potatoes I learned the following.

1) Dig the hole / row 6-8 inches deep.

2) Sprinkle the hole with garden lime.

3) Space your seed potatoes in the row (I cut my seed potatoes in half or thirds prior to planting).

4.) Sprinkle again with garden lime.

5) Sprinkle with general garden fertilizer.

6). Cover up your potato row with soil.

7) Mulch heavily over top of potato row (I used leaves and grass)

8) Let nature do its work...

Having pulled them a day or two ago - we now need to figure out where to store them such that they do not get any light.

Coincidentally - we had gone to a local Amish grocery store this past weekend and purchased 6 black plastic / shallow produce crates for $3 each. Two of those are coming in handy as we attempt to store the potatoes with proper air flow.

We'll be covering the crates in our basement (in a room that doesn't get much light) with heavy towels (again - to shield the potatoes from light but yet allow for some air flow). We'll see how it goes... Our guess is that we will likely eat through them by the end of the year - maybe a little longer...
